Horse Fair x

Horse Fair
Maciej Simm

Every year, on the first Monday after Ash Wednesday, in Skaryszew (PL, Świętokrzyskie voivodeship) there is an event of “Wstępy” held which is one of the biggest horse fairs in Europe. The legend claims that the privilege to hold the fair was granted to Skaryszew by Władysław Jagiełło – the king of Poland, after the battle of Grunwald (1410) for delivering horses to the battlefield.

“Wstępy” are a big, rustic celebration, trading place, but also a place that is causing lot of controversy. Some of the horses presented in Skaryszew are sold to foreign traders, directly to the slaughterhouse.
